Reporter’s Notebook: Behind the Scenes at the DNC

by Errol Louis, NY1 News Political Anchor and Host of "Inside City Hall"

Tonight marks the last evening of the 2016 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Philadelphia, PA. TWC News will have full coverage of the Democratic presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton’s, convention speech. Errol Louis, our Political Anchor and Host of NY1’s Inside City Hall, is on the ground at the DNC. In this second installment of our special Reporter’s Notebook series, Errol offers his behind the scenes look at the convention.

Big Names, Big Interviews

Covering the Democratic National Convention from a New York angle is a challenge because virtually all top officials in New York are Democrats, and all of them want as much airtime as possible.

I spoke with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D), whose thoughts about the convention included reminiscing about his late father, Gov. Mario Cuomo, who delivered a famous keynote address at the 1984 Democratic convention.

Big Convention, Small Space

The various Charter/TWC News channels sharing our skybox are part of an army of media covering the convention.  Every day at 6 pm, anchors and correspondents around the Wells Fargo Arena jump into position and start broadcasting. Inside our box, my colleagues and I end up doing the same thing around 7 pm.

Here’s the view from our box.

It has been a week of long nights. I typically am in or around the skybox for 12 hours each day, ending around midnight. We get meals and support thanks to execs like Bernadine Han, GVP of News and Local Programming, who stopped by the box on night three of the convention.
